As with most things nowadays buying a health insurance plan can be far from easy with a large number of insurers offering a wide range of plans and all competing against each other for your business. The secret of course  to purchasing cheap medical insurance is to find the ideal policy to meet your own needs and those of your family and to do so at the best possible price. If you are buying health insurance for the first time, perhaps having to arrange your own cover after years of enjoying coverage under an employer’s group scheme, then there are 4 straightforward steps which you absolutely have to take to ensure that you purchase the right affordable health insurance plan.

1. Start out by deciding precisely how much you can afford to pay for a health insurance policy and base your search for a policy around this sum of money. If you and your family members are all relatively young and in good health then you might find that it is not too hard to find excellent comprehensive cover within your reach. However, if you are not able to find a plan at the price you are willing to pay, do not be enticed to pay any more than you can really afford!

Select a policy to match your budget.

There are a lot of different plans being offered nowadays with many different payment structures. It might suit your needs for instance to find a plan that has a high deductible and low monthly premiums that also qualifies for use within a health savings plan. This would have the advantage of permitting you to build up a cash value in your policy to meet the cost of future claims and also qualify for tax relief.

2. Look around and consider policies being sold by a variety of different companies. Make sure that any insurer being considered provides coverage in your area and will also give you cover should you be traveling out of state either on business or for pleasure. Additionally, if you require medical insurance for pre-existing conditions you will have to look very carefully at any policy to make sure that you can get the cover you need.

3. As soon as you have narrowed your options down to 3 or 4 possible health insurers, research these companies carefully to see that they are reputable and financially sound. Frequently you will find yourself dealing with major insurers who have been in business for many years and are common-place ‘household’ names. However, if the insurer you are considering is not so well known then you need to check them out using a web-based service like that provided by A. M. Best. Should you be in any doubt whatsoever about a company then you would probably be best advised to simply drop it from your list.

4. One excellent sign of how good an insurer is is the number of complaints which it receives from unhappy policy holders. Obviously any health insurance company with a high level of complaints and a lot of disgruntled customers is best avoided and, happily, you can get this information from the National Association of Insurance Commissioner’s website.

Health insurance is very much a consumer product nowadays and plans come in every shape and size to suit a host of needs. Take the time therefore to aquaint yourself with just what is available to you in your state and find the policy that best meets your own needs. With a bit of time and some careful investigation you will find an excellent and affordable health insurance plan.
