Health insurance agents must keep up with the growing technology demands. The internet is a great way to gather new prospects and become known to the entire country. It is becoming more necessary to have product information, quoting and sales tools online, rather than just your contact information.

Field marketing organizations (FMOs) are expanding their technology and providing agents with more interactive ways to develop leads and make sales. Several FMOs will be competing for your business and some may make promises that they cannot realistically keep. You may find yourself talking to three, four or even more FMOs that want you to sell for them. This process can be very overwhelming. It may be beneficial for you to subscribe to the Agents Sales Journal for ongoing articles and advice in this matter.

Another way to achieve business success with the use of the internet is online web leads. Most online insurance leads are prospects that submit their information online and this information is sent to the agent via e-mail. This can be a cost effective way to talk to prospects quickly. Most health insurance web leads allow you to filter the leads to meet your specific niche. Usually, the more filters that you choose, the more expensive the lead costs. Leads can cost anywhere from $3-$20 on average. Usually online leads are shared with other agents, so you will have to earn your prospect’s business. Some agents let the leads “season” for a while and some agents attempt to be the first agent to contact the prospect. If you choose to “season” the leads, you may want to wait a month to six weeks before contacting the prospect. This way, the prospect has had an opportunity to hear a bunch of sales pitches and think about what they want. You then call them at a point in time, in which they are interested in buying.

If you are considering adding to your business through the use of an online FMO or online lead purchases, you may want to first consult with your business plan and budget. You may cut some expenses, such as gas and car maintenance, but you will have other costs as well. For example, you may have a higher phone or internet bill. You also want to consider selling insurance online in multiple states, in which you will need to purchase licenses in each state that you want to sell in.

Further, you may spend more money improving your web site. You may want to hire a web designer or purchase new software and computer equipment. You will want to do a web search to see what other health insurance agents are selling online. You may want to consider if you can compete with them or if you even want to compete with them. Don’t get overwhelmed with technology, embrace it. You may not be a technology guru, but if you have some knowledge on the topic, you may be able to make a more informed decision regarding your business expansion.
