Over-the-counter hearing aids offer an alternative to consumers who may not be able to afford traditional hearing aids. Hearing aids can be extremely expensive, often costing several thousand dollars.

Cost is not the only benefit to over-the-counter hearing aids. Over-the-counter hearing aid can be purchased and used very quickly, while traditional hearing aids can take time to be available. When getting a traditional hearing aid, the person must make an appointment with an audiologist or hearing professional and wait for the hearing aid to be delivered to the audiologist.

Over-the-counter hearing aids do not help all levels of hearing impairment. They are designed to be of benefit to people with mild to moderate hearing loss. People with severe hearing loss need to purchase traditional hearing aids.

Hearing loss can be a symptom of a medical condition that requires treatment. If a person purchases a hearing aid without seeing it physician, the person may be risking their health by not having proper diagnosis and treatment if a medical condition caused the hearing loss.

Some types of hearing loss can be treated by a doctor and hearing can be restored. If a person purchases and over-the-counter hearing aid without seeing a physician, a person may be purchasing a hearing aid unnecessarily. Impacted earwax is an example of a cause of conductive hearing loss that is easily corrected in a doctor’s office which would eliminate the need for hearing aid.

Over-the-counter hearing aids would not have the advanced features of traditional hearing aids. The over-the-counter hearing aids are very basic models in order to keep the cost low. However, the lack of directional microphones in designs of over-the-counter hearing aids is of concern to some hearing professionals since it limits the effectiveness of the over-the-counter hearing aids.

The lack of customization of the over-the-counter, one-size-fits-all hearing aids can affect the quality of the hearing aid user’s experience. Audiologist and hearing aid dispensers prescribe sets of specifications for traditional hearing aids to match the needs of hearing aid users. Without this, many hearing aid users are going to have less than satisfactory experiences with over-the-counter hearing aids.

Many hearing experts and hearing professionals are concerned about the percentage of people who need hearing aids but do not purchase them because of the price. Over-the-counter hearing aids may encourage more people to use the hearing aids that they need. Another solution to the high cost of traditional hearing aids for some people is to seek assistance from government agencies and organizations to help people with the purchase price and costs of getting traditional hearing aids.
